Planeta Wine Tour
Wherever you are in Sicily and whatever is the purpose of your stay, let yourself be tempted by a wine day with us: our English speaking driver will meet you at your place and guide you through a day dedicated to Sicilian wines.
Planeta- Sambuca
Located near Sambuca di Sicilia, a town of Arab origin on the shores of Lake Arancio, the Ulmo estate, inaugurated in 1995, is Planeta’s first winery. Surrounded by 93 hectares of vineyards where several grape varieties are grown, it stands in a landscape of matchless beauty, with a wine cellar built just a few meters away from the 16th-century farmhouse – The Baglio – which has always been owned by the family.
This estate is home to Chardonnay Planeta, one of the super crus grown by the firm, and to the single-vineyard crus: Merlot Sito dell’Ulmo and Syrah Maroccoli. Finally, there are the territorial varieties: Alastro and Plumbago, monovarietal Grecanico and Nero d’Avola respectively.
The Winery
Established in 1995, it is the first company’s wine cellar. Architecturally in keeping with the surrounding territory and local traditions, the ground floor houses the fermentation tanks. The underlying barrique cellar, which has about 700 barriques, is where the finest grapes are aged and where they make the Classical Method Brut.
The Visit
Guests have a guided tour of the winery, enjoy a wine tastings of 3 wines paired with local products and stroll through the vineyards.
At Ulmo estate there is an open-air Iter Vitis Museum (grapevine route), dedicated to the history of Sicilian wine, which includes a teaching field where you can observe all the Sicilian varieties and even some ancient Georgian varieties.
The Country Museum periodically holds exhibitions of contemporary photography and installations linked to the projects on art and landscape supported by Planeta.
Finally there is the La Segreta nature footpath, which offers a choice of three routes along the vineyards, revealing surprising landscapes and pockets of wilderness.
Hectares : Ulmo 51 hectares, Maroccoli 42 hectares
Soils
ULMO – the valley, once crossed by a river in ancient times, has now become a lake. This has helped make the estate’s soils very deep and pebbly. The upper layers are more calcareous, with portions of dark loam rich in vegetable content.
MAROCCOLI – The Maroccoli vineyard lies 450 meters above sea level. The soil is on average clayey and rich in silt. It has an extraordinary microclimate thanks to the breeze blowing from the sea, just a few kilometers away.

Consider the option of a driver/guide (licensed to guide inside the archaeological areas) and combine the excursion with the visit of the Templi di Selinunte
The great room and the courtyards of the fifteenth century baglio are the perfect background for aperitifs, lunches and dinners where the best products of the area can be tasted (from olive oil to local cheeses, and to locally produced bread using old recipes) as well as the traditional home-made dishes of the Planeta family.
Ulmo can also host private events, planned individually to meet the needs and the tastes of guests.
